Gaston Browne gana elecciones generales en Antigua y Barbuda
El primer ministro de Antigua y Barbuda, Gaston Browne, retuvo este jueves el puesto en el Parlamento por St. John’s City West y fue electo para un segundo mandato.
“El pueblo habló”, dijo el primer ministro y envió un mensaje a Latinoamérica pidiendo el fortalecimiento de las democracias en la región.
El Partido Laborista de Browne logró nueve escaños y se confirmó como la mayoría política en ese país.
La comisión electoral de Antigua y Barbuda informó el miércoles que, con el 40 por ciento de los votos escrutados, los resultados preliminares favorecían al Partido Laborista (ABPL, por su sigla en inglés).
Más de 52.000 ciudadanos fueron convocados a participar en las comicios generales para elegir a los 17 integrantes de la Cámara de Representantes y del Senado, disuelto el pasado 26 de febrero.
Los colegios electorales abrieron a las 06H00 y cerraron a las 18H00 (hora local), en una jornada sin incidentes.
Los candidatos a la Cámara de Representantes fueron elegidos por el voto popular, pero no obligatorio, de los 17 distritos electorales.
El Senado también está conformado por 17 miembros, de los cuales diez fueron designados por el primer ministro, cuatro por el consejo del líder de la oposición y tres en consultas con organizaciones.
Antigua-Barbuda Labour Party wins resounding new mandate
Prime Minister Gaston Browne led his Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) to a resounding win in the general elections on Wednesday. After an often controversial campaign, the ABLP emerged victorious, on track to win 15 of the 17 seats.
The opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) seemed likely to end up with no more than one seat. Trevor Walker, the candidate for the Barbuda People’s Movement (BPM), took the Barbuda seat, ousting ABLP incumbent Arthur Nibbs.
UPP political leader Harold Lovell failed to win a seat for the second time and deputy UPP leader, Wilmoth Daniel, also lost his constituency race to Browne by a margin of almost three to one.
Joanne Massiah, former UPP incumbent, now leader of the newly formed Democratic National Alliance (DNA), also lost her seat to the ABLP.
Preliminary reports suggested that voter turnout was relatively low.
PM’s wife becomes youngest parliamentarian
Maria Bird Browne becomes the youngest parliamentarian, elected at just 26 years old.
The granddaughter of the nation’s founding father, Sir Vere Cornwall Bird, says she’s “elated” to win and more importantly to serve.
She thanked the electors for supporting her in such an overwhelming way, winning in all 14 ballot boxes in the St. John’s Rural East constituency.
Bird Browne is also the wife of prime minister designate, Gaston Browne who is set to be sworn in as prime minister at 11 a.m. today.
The young parliamentarian who was thrown into the race at the last minute late last year, says her win is a victory for the youth as much as it is for women. She’s encouraging both to go after their dreams and to live to serve.
