Jamaica celebra elecciones generales y parlamentarias
Más de un millón 900.000 ciudadanos jamaicanos están convocados a las urnas para elegir, este jueves, al próximo primer ministro de esa nación caribeña, además de 63 puestos en el Parlamento, por los que compiten 139 candidatos.
Los dos aspirantes a la jefatura del Gobierno con oportunidades reales de victoria son Andrew Holness, actual primer ministro, en representación del Partido Laborista de Jamaica (JLP, pos su sigla en inglés); y Peter Phillips, del Partido Nacional del Pueblo de Oposición (PNP, en inglés).

Como parte de la estrategia de campaña, Holness, aseguró que su administración brindará la vacuna contra la Covid-19 de manera gratuita, en medio de las preocupaciones que genera la pandemia.
Por su parte, Phillips promete que el PNP pondrá fin a la monarquía que todavía ejerce, formalmente, la jefatura del Estado en el país, bajo el mando de la Reina Isabel II del Reino Unido, mediante la celebración de un referendo, a celebrarse dentro de sus primeros 18 meses en el cargo.
Además, asegura que su equipo está preparado para rescatar a Jamaica de una economía en declive que está dejando mayor pobreza por la crisis de la pandemia, tras un largo freno al turismo, actividad que emplea a unas 300.000 personas.
Phillips también acusa al actual Gobierno de no saber cómo controlar el crimen y la creciente violencia, una problemática que preocupa a toda la nación. Tanto es así, que ambas fuerzas políticas trabajan de manera conjunta en el Parlamento para la creación de una nueva Ley de Seguridad Nacional.Jamaica celebra las elecciones generales y parlamentarias en medio de la emergencia sanitaria, que ha provocado hasta este jueves 2.683 casos positivos y 24 muertes en el país, con un aumento exponencial en las últimas semanas.
Quien resulte elegido primer ministro, deberá ser refrendado como jefe de Gobierno por la mayoría de la Asamblea Legislativa, y nombrado por el gobernador general del país, Patrick Allen.
Holness Confident The JLP Will Increase Its Parliamentary Majority When The Votes Are Counted
Prime Minister Andrew Holness says he expects the Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, to win far more constituencies today than the 34 seats it won in the previous General Elections.
The expression of confidence from the Prime Minister comes with just under an hour to go before the polls close in Jamaica’s 18th General Elections since Universal Adult Suffrage in 1944.
The Prime Minister and JLP Leader was speaking with Nationwide’s Abka Fitz-Henley.
The confident JLP Leader says he’s anticipating that the party will significantly increase its majority when ballots are counted later today.
Mr. Holness is seeking to lead the JLP to a second consecutive term – a feat it has not achieved since 1967 in a contested General Elections.
The JLP Leader says he’s confident the PNP will not be able to deny his party victory today.
Mr. Holness says the JLP has made a good case to the Jamaican people to be afforded the opportunity to continue to govern the country.
The Prime Minister declined to comment extensively on word from Dr. Peter Phillips that he’d end his political career if the PNP is defeated today.
And, with Jamaica conducting its first General Elections during a pandemic, the Prime Minister said he’s encouraged that most people appear to have taken precautions today.
PNP President Dr. Peter Phillips Predicts Party Supports Will Cry ‘Tears of Joy’ After the Polls
The People’s National Party, PNP, President, Dr Peter Phillips, is urging party supporters not to worry at this time because there will only be tears of joy tonight.
Dr. Phillips says he’s not thinking about losing at this time because his party is doing everything to win.
The PNP President was speaking with Natiowide News at the Norman Manley High School in St. Andrew East Central.
He was surrounded by supporters who chanted that it’s time for people power.
However, earlier today while speaking with the media, Dr. Phillips who’s also the PNP’s Candidate for East Central St. Andrew, says he will retire from politics if his party is not successful at the polls today.
