El número de muertos en las Bahamas a causa del huracán Dorian aumentó a 30, informaron este jueves las autoridades.
El ministro de Salud de Bahamas, Duane Sands, dijo a The Associated Press en entrevista telefónica que se prevé que la cifra sea «significativamente mayor» en los próximos días, mientras las cuadrillas continúan con misiones de búsqueda y rescate.
Sands señaló que las víctimas son de las islas de Gran Bahama y Ábaco, y se incluye a personas heridas que fueron trasladadas vía aérea a la isla de Nueva Providencia.
En el archipiélago, a solo 80 km de la costa de la Florida, es un paisaje desolador.
Varias naciones se sumaron a los esfuerzos de rescate para las miles de víctimas de Dorian en las islas Ábaco y Gran Bahama, en el norte del archipiélago.
Destrucción inimaginable
Dorian soplaba con intensidad de categoría 5 cuando se instaló durante casi dos días sobre el norte de las Bahamas, donde dejó una destrucción inimaginable.
Un equipo de la AFP que sobrevoló el pueblo de Marsh Harbour el jueves vio escenas de daños catastróficos, cientos de casas destruidas hasta los cimientos, coches volcados, campos enteros de escombros e inundaciones generalizadas.
Se pudo observar como un equipo de personas que llevaban máscaras y trajes protectores blancos cargaban cadáveres en bolsas verdes sobre la plataforma de un camión.
Algunos residentes, aún aturdidos por la tormenta, habían salido a las calles arrastrando sus maletas con sus posesiones más valiosas.
La extensión del daño en Bahamas comenzaba a conocerse este jueves, a medida que los equipos de socorro lograban recorrer el área para rescatar sobrevivientes y llevar ayuda a las víctimas.
Naciones Unidas advirtió que unas 70.000 personas que están en Bahamas necesitan «ayuda inmediata».
El secretario general adjunto para Asuntos Humanitarios de la ONU, Mark Lowcock, dijo después de reunirse con el primer ministro de Bahamas, Hubert Minnis, que se necesitan con urgencia refugios, agua potable, alimentos y medicinas para unas 50.000 personas en la isla Gran Bahama y para entre 15.000 y 20.000 en Gran Ábaco.
«Es un infierno en todas partes», dijo a la AFP Brian Harvey, un canadiense que vive en Ábaco.
«Necesitamos salir de aquí», añadió. «Han sido ya cuatro o cinco días, es hora de irnos».
Steven Turnquest, quien llegó a Nassau desde Marsh Harbour con sus hijos de cuatro y cinco años tras sortear la tormenta, dijo a la AFP que se sentía afortunado de estar vivo.
«Veo a mis hijos y agradezco a Dios, le pido que me lleve a mí, pero que no se los lleve a ellos. Sobreviví al huracán agarrándome de una puerta», contó.
La tormenta arrasa Estados Unidos
El huracán Dorian golpeaba este jueves el sureste de Estados Unidos con fuertes vientos y lluvias torrenciales en su camino rumbo a Carolina del Norte, luego de haber arrasado las islas Bahamas.
Según el último informe del Centro Nacional de Huracanes (NHC), divulgado a las 20H00 locales (0H00 GMT), el ojo del huracán, con vientos que alcanzan los 160 km/h, se ubicaba a unos 50 km de Cape Fear, en Carolina del Norte.
La monstruosa tormenta, que está clasificada como un huracán de categoría 2, avanza lentamente en dirección noreste a unos 17 km/h y desató varios tornados en el sureste estadounidense de los que no se reportaron víctimas.
Bahamas government registered stock to be listed on the securities exchange
Beginning this month, Bahamas government registered stock will be listed on the Bahamas International Securities Exchange (BISX), the ministry of finance revealed, opening up the market on government bonds and allowing market forces to determine the daily value.
This month, bonds will be listed on BISX, but the trading of government bonds will not commence until November. Deputy prime minister and minister of finance Peter Turnquest hailed the move as a modernization that will stimulate Bahamian capital markets.
“We are getting ready to list over 200 government bonds, which represent the entire portfolio of outstanding securities going back to 1999,” Turnquest said in the release.
“This is another area where the government is making good on its promise to modernize and keep pace with the digital transformation happening globally and introduce more efficiency to the government’s borrowing. Centralized market trading of government bonds is an important component for the growth of the entire Bahamian capital market. It’s been a long time in the making and I am proud that this government’s leadership has helped to finally bring this project to fruition.”
This move brings government securities fully into a digital space and has been a collaborative project of BISX, the Ministry of Finance and The Central Bank of The Bahamas, the release stated. “Several changes are being implemented, including the creation of a centralized marketplace for all Bahamas government debt dollar securities.”
The project’s phases include the listing, the launching of a Bahamas government registered stock depository and the transition to a paperless registry. Turnquest said in the release that Bahamians will now have “easy access to investment information and market activity on all government bonds … and there will be transparency around the pricing of government securities,” he said. “Bahamians will be able to see and have an opportunity to trade outstanding securities on an open market.”
According to the release, “The initial prices for the bonds will be set by the central bank’s existing pricing structure until trading begins; government bonds will no longer be fixed at par; investors who plan to sell their securities before maturity will be subject to the current market price and any associated fees; trading will have no impact on the maturing value of a security held to maturity; and regardless of the market value, interest and principal payments will not change from the terms set out in the respective initial public offerings for all investors;
The release further notes that “Investors participating in new issuances of government securities in excess of $100,000 will need to utilize a broker to purchase these securities; investors with existing holdings that were purchased through the central bank can continue to sell those holdings directly through the central bank or through a broker; and investors with existing holdings or new issuances $100,000 and below have the option of buying and selling those holdings directly through the central bank or through a broker.”
