St Kitts-Nevis opposition files motion of no confidence in PM

The opposition St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) has filed a motion of no confidence in Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris.

The motion, in the name of leader of the opposition, Dr Denzil Douglas, has been submitted to the Clerk of the St. Kitts and Nevis National Assembly, in accordance with Standing Order 27 of the Rules of the National Assembly.

“I hereby give you notice of the presentation of a motion of no confidence, a copy of which is attached and ask that it be noted in the Order Book of the Assembly for tabling and debate as a matter of grave urgency.

“I am asking that this motion be tabled at the next sitting of the National Assembly so that it can be debated and disposed of as urgent matter,” Douglas told the clerk.

The four-page motion resolves “that this Honourable House express grave concern that the Prime Minister represents a clear and present danger to democracy in this country and his activities have belittled and denigrated the esteemed Office of the Prime Minister and has tarnished the good name and standing of this Country both regionally and internationally;

“Be it further resolved that this Honourable House no longer has any confidence in the Prime Minister and calls for the immediate resignation of the Hon. Dr Timothy Harris as Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis.”

Among numerous complaints listed in the motion is an assertion that “the prime minister has corrupted and cheapened the citizenship by investment programme and created a ‘race to the bottom’ where sales agents are being allowed to sell the sacred citizenship and patrimony of St Kitts and Nevis for extremely reduced prices against our laws” — an issue that is currently at the centre of an international controversy.

The National Assembly was due to meet on Wednesday in its Budget Session.

Just three weeks ago, a similar motion of no confidence was filed by the opposition in Saint Lucia against Prime Minister Allen Chastanet.
