Holness 100: PM maintains ganja legalisation be put to referendum

Prime Minister Andrew Holness is maintaining that the matter of whether Jamaica should move to legalise ganja should be put to a referendum.

Holness, responding to a question on The Gleaner’s myReport platform said the government is far away from the point of making ganja legal.

However, the Prime Minister said the government wants to engage the population on the subject matter.

Holness says Jamaica has already signalled to the international community that it supports changes to how ganja is classified.

Last year, Jamaica amended the law decriminalising the possession of up to two ounces of ganja, making it a non-arrestable offence.

However, offenders may be ticketed and fined a monetary penalty.

The law also allows a regime to lawfully use ganja for medical, therapeutic and scientific purposes.

While in opposition, Holness called for the then government to put to a referendum the issues of legalising ganja, amendments to the buggery law and replacing the United Kingdom-based Privy Council with the Caribbean Court of Justice as Jamaica’s final appellate court.
