Guyana and Suriname get help to tap Islamic market

The Islamic Centre for the Development of Trade (ICDT), an arm of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), is financing a four-day workshop in Suriname that is meant to expand trading between the 57-member bloc of the OIC and Guyana and Suriname.

The workshop, which was organized by the ministry of trade and industry of Suriname, commenced Monday in Paramaribo and concluded on Thursday.

The training was meant for companies from Guyana and Suriname – both of these countries are members of the OIC. Roughly 20 companies and organizations from Suriname and Guyana participated in the seminar.

The goals of the ICDT are to promote investments and to develop trade flows between member states by assisting in trade negotiations, and assisting and promoting contacts between «enterprises and economic operators.» As well, the ICDT is looking to promote the products of Guyana and Suriname and to encourage and give them the knowledge how to access these markets by promoting trade information and assisting member states in the fields of trade promotion and international negotiations.

Suriname trade with OIC members from 2000 to today has more than doubled. Some trading partners of Suriname in the Islamic bloc are Albania, Cote D’Ivoire, Guyana, Indonesia, Iran, Mali, Malaysia, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The OIC bloc represents about 1.5 million people, which is translates into a lucrative trading market. The group consist of some very diverse countries, some very rich and some very poor, and they span from Mozambique to Arabia, and from Indonesia to Suriname.

Suriname and Guyana are the only two countries in the Western Hemisphere that belong to this group. Suriname is also a member of the Islamic Bank. Guyana has indicated its interest to join the Islamic Bank also.
