Funcionarios de Guyana y Brasil se reunieron para acordar diferentes áreas de cooperación
Brazil and Guyana discuss possible areas of collaboration
Several areas of cooperation were discussed as Brazilian Ambassador Lineu Pupo de Paula today paid a courtesy call on First Vice President and Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo, at his temporary office, at the Ministry of Presidency, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown.
The two diplomats sought to renew and strengthen their countries’ relationship through this meeting, and in this regard, they discussed several areas of possible collaboration, which will benefit both countries.
According to Ambassador de Paula, the two countries share a number of common interests, and this made the discussions even more fruitful.
He said, “It was a very pleasant visit, besides the friendship that connects our two countries, we have common interests too…and looking for ways to help to develop Guyana and at the same time we need help.”
The Ambassador pointed out that Brazil may look at setting up a hydro project in Guyana. He said “we can talk about energy, the north of Brazil needs energy, and we can have maybe a project here, in the Mazaruni River, a hydro (project) here.”
Another area that Brazil can assist Guyana in is education, through the implementation and teaching of Portuguese in schools.
In addition, Brazil is also interested in assisting the Government of Guyana to pave the road from Linden to Lethem.
Meanwhile, the PM expressed gratitude to the Ambassador for calling on him, while at the same time he expressed his sentiments towards Brazil for its cooperation over the years.
“We are grateful for the continued and continuous support from Brazil for Guyana’s sovereignty, people say you can choose your friends, but not your neighbour, we are both…we have been so locked together in the past and we hope that we will be locked together for the future for all times,” he said.
He also pointed out that the teaching of Portuguese in school will help to bridge the communication gap between the two countries and serve several sectors, primarily business.
