Incendian la embajada de Venezuela y primer ministro acusa a la oposición
La acusación que apunta a la oposición en la isla fue formulada por el primer ministro Denzil Douglas. Explicó que justamente ocurrieron después de una manifestación de simpatizantes del opositor Partido Unidad y los acusó de usar estos procedimientos violentos. La sede de la OEA también fue atacada.
El primer ministro de San Cristóbal y Nieves, Denzil Douglas, dijo que los incendios que destruyeron la embajada de Venezuela y las oficinas utilizadas por la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA) en el país caribeño fueron provocados por quienes practican «tácticas políticas extremas» que buscan desestabilizar al gobierno.
Explicó que justamente ocurrieron después de una manifestación de simpatizantes del opositor Partido Unidad y los acusó de usar estos procedimientos violentos en la isla.
El siniestro que destruyó ambos espacios «fue un ataque con móvil político», reiteró el funcionario. Los dos edificios, ubicados en la capital, Bassettere, ocurrieron antes del amanecer del domingo y las autoridades respondieron a la situación alrededor de la medianoche, destacó la agencia AP.
Se informó el fuego se inició con pocas horas de diferencia. La sede diplomática quedó reducida a escombros mientras la oficina de la OEA tuvo daños menores. Nadie resultó herido.
Por su parte el inspector de la policía Lyndon David dijo que dos hombres, cuyos nombres no dio a conocer, estaban detenidos, pero no les han presentado cargos. Agregó que no había evidencia para concluir un móvil.
«Hay aquellos en este país cuyo principal objetivo es ganar mientras definen ganar sin importar el impacto en nuestra orgullosa y progresista nación», dijo en un mensaje televisado en cadena nacional en el país conformado por dos islas.
Mark Brantley, líder de la oposición en el Parlamento, condenó los ataques y exhortó a la gente a ayudar a la policía a resolver el caso. Dijo que llamó al embajador venezolano y al representante de la OEA para expresar «su pena y repulsión», por el incidente.
«Encontramos especialmente horrendo cualquier ataque al personal o propiedad de países extranjeros amigos, que han mostrado y siguen demostrando apoyo invaluable», agregó.
La política en la isla se ha polarizado cada vez más desde diciembre, cuando Brantley presentó una moción de desaprobación para convocar a elecciones adelantadas. En octubre, Unidad encabezó una marcha que llenó las calles de Basseterre con cientos de manifestantes, una enorme participación en esta pequeña nación de 50.000 personas.
Douglas dijo que el país no debe permitir que las diferencias políticas afecten la seguridad.

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil has openly accused the Opposition of being behind the recent fires at the Venezuelan Embassy and OAS office.
According to the Prime Minister, the Opposition has attempted to create an image of a country in crisis, however because the people were “behaving themselves”, its members had resorted to extreme political tactics following two “illegal protests”.
Dr. Douglas said fires at the foreign institutions were clearly carried out by those who oppose his administration in an attempt to undermine it by attacking relations with friendly governments.
“On the evening of Saturday January 24, an illegal night time demonstration was held by PAM politicians and associates- Lindsay Grant, Eugene Hamilton, Timothy Harris, and others.
“Around midnight that same night, a fire was set at the OAS Secretariat…a few hours later the Embassy of Venezuela burned to the ground and two evenings prior PAM politicians and associates- Shawn Richards, Jonel Powell, Timothy Harris and others rushed and mobbed a social gathering my Deputy and I were attending at a Port Zante business place,” he said.
He went on, “For months persons wishing to replace my government have asserted that we in St. Kitts and Nevis are gripped by a crisis. The public clearly disagrees and the public has behaved accordingly. These Opposition politicians have repeatedly berated Kittitians and Nevisians for not rising up…It is clear therefore that some have decided that since there is no crisis they will have to manufacture one.”
He warned that although his government respected the right of persons to disagree with its policies and to demonstrate or protest, it would not tolerate any operational shift from disagreement and protest to destruction and mayhem in an attempt to create instability in the country.
“Any person involved in fermented mayhem and destruction in this federation will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law.
The Venezuelan Embassy was completely destroyed in the 4am fire while the OAS office received slight damages.

«IT is sad that PM Douglas has sought through innuendo to inflame this unfortunate incident and blame the Opposition. To connect a peaceful opposition protest at the Marriott with these fires several hours later and several miles away can make sense only to the most cunning and calculating mind.”
This was the view expressed by Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and member of the Unity Movement the Hon. Mark Brantley, in response to Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas’ suggestion that the recent Venezuelan Embassy and Organisation of American States (OAS) fires were politically motivated.
